Exploring Lebanon, one of Ohio’s best small towns: history, hospitality and horse-drawn carriage parade

When Charles Dickens stopped by the Golden Lamb in 1842, he was less than impressed with the inn’s hospitality.

 

The English writer declared that the tea and coffee were “very bad and the water worse.” So he requested brandy, but the inn was a “temperance hotel, and spirits are not to be had for love or money,” Dickens wrote in his travelogue, “American Notes.”

 

Some 200 years later, I’m happy to report that the inn’s hospitality has improved a great deal. Brandy was long ago added to the menu, alongside some of the best comfort food you’ll find anywhere.

 

And the 17 overnight rooms here – including one named for Dickens -- double as museum exhibits.
