Rutherford B Hayes Suite

Rutherford B. Hayes Suite (1822-1893)

Rutherford B. Hayes, 19th President of the United States, came to Lebanon, Ohio on Monday, August 5, 1867. He was here to begin his campaign for governor of Ohio. He and is Democratic opponent, former Ohio Supreme Court Judge Allen G. Thurman, agreed to start their campaigns on the same day, August 5. Hayes chose Lebanon for his starting point, while Thurman picked Waverly, Ohio, some 8o miles to the east.

Sitting Room

Hayes spoke at 11-year-old Washington Hall. It was located two blocks north of The Golden Lamb and one to the east, on the southeast corner of Silver and Mechanic streets. A market house on its first floor, it had a 500-seat public hall on the second floor. Hayes would win, and be elected governor two more time before becoming president in 1876. The Rutherford B. Hayes Suite is located on our third floor and has two queen-size beds with a street view of Broadway.
